Mechanical Engineering
Overview
Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, development, and production of mechanical systems and devices. Mechanical engineers apply their knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, and other related fields to design and manufacture a wide range of products, from small handheld devices to large-scale industrial equipment.
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be able to model, analyze, design, simulate, manufacture, assemble and work with various mechanical engineering systems such as: automotives and transportation systems, renewable and green energy systems, power generation systems, robots and dynamic systems and aerospace systems.
Experiential learning is an important component in Lakehead University’s Mechanical BEng program. Our students participate in team-based learning opportunities, including projects and presentations, hands-on laboratories, and a senior design project.

Student Q & A
Why did you decide to study engineering?
I think a classic for many engineering students, it has always been there. Lego, Knex, Meccano, building a kit from instructions just to take it apart and make it better 10 minutes later. Lucky my math abilities were there, and I had good influence from my parents, my late father being an engineer.
So, it was a no brainer from a young age, my choice of mechanical engineering came from the numerous machining and tech courses in high school, the fascinated me being able to build what I imagined.
Why Lakehead?
Being a college transfer, this is the choice of school to go to. The lakehead collage degree students have a good reputation in the industry.
What were you doing before you came to Lakehead?
What's life been like in Thunder Bay?
Definitely different, yet similar to where I’m from. It’s a large small town, there is four of everything. If you are bored or need a break, there is amazing scenery and hiking trails. Within an hour drive in any direction you can be in a breathtaking place.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a smaller town (Georgetown) outside of the GTA, living in a town but growing up very rural as my dad was a farm boy at heart. My dad was a PEng from Guelph University in agricultural engineering. He worked in injection moulding, making running the companies hence why I want to go with an MBA as well.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying engineering?
Love it – this is not a program or career you do just because the pay is good. What keeps you going is the love of what you’re doing. This is a passion of a career, if you are constantly curious about how something works, why something is the way that it is, and love challenging questions that take an ‘out side the box’ approach then I think engineering is perfect! (also be really good at math!)
What do you wish you’d known before you started?
Get a group of hard-working people to be your friends, it’s hard but school is a lot easier when you have a group of people all struggling together. Having someone to explain something in a new way or teaching someone something helps you better understand.
