Portrait of Dr. Kozinski
Dr. Janusz Koziński

Dr. Janusz Koziński is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University.

He is a globally-trained higher education leader, multidisciplinary researcher, creative thinker, arts enthusiast, and entrepreneur, who brings international experience from pioneering academic institutions in Canada, the United States and Europe.

In 2022, he was awarded the Gold Medal, the highest award for engineers in the province, by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).

The following year, in May 2023, Koziński received the Gold Medal Award from Engineers Canada. The highest distinction for professional engineers in Canada, the Gold Medal Award recognizes the exceptional achievements of engineers who, through their work and service, have improved the lives of Canadians and others across the world.

Prior to joining Lakehead University, he was Founding President of the New Model Institute for Technology & Engineering in the United Kingdom and served as Founding Dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering in Toronto. He was also formerly the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan.

Educated in Kraków, Poland at the AGH University of Science and Technology, Koziński received his post-doctoral training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and spent much of his academic career at McGill University, where he was a Sir William Dawson Scholar and Associate Vice-Principal of Research and International Relations.

Koziński’s research includes projects related to the environmental impact of energy technology, greenhouse gas mitigation, fabrication of nanomaterials, public safety in buildings vulnerable to bio-agents, and Mars exploration. He is an elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and holds one of the largest NSERC Discovery research grants in Canada in his field.

Known for his ability to identify and mobilize complementary technologies to creatively solve a wide range of energy, environmental and security challenges, Dr. Kozinski’s own extensively published investigations are being widely applied to address everything from biomass conversion to environmentally neutral biofuel production, mitigation of nuclear waste, and the protection of buildings at risk to terrorist attacks.
